About This Coffee

Established in 1998 in Mathioya District, Muranga County, Gondo Coffee Factory is operated by the New Kiriti Farmers Cooperative Society. The mill works with 727 local farmers who cultivate the varieties of SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11 and Batian at an average elevation of 1,900masl. This 'top' grade Peaberry is an exceptional example of how terroir and local expertise combine to deliver intensity and complexity in the cup.

The Region

Mathioya Sub-County, located in Muranga County, is a key agricultural region in the central highlands known for tea, coffee, and avocado production. The region is characterized by fertile lands, contributing significantly to both local and export markets.

Muranga County, in Kenya’s Central highlands, is home to the slopes and foothills of Mount Kenya. Many rivers run through the region and the soil is rich and volcanic, providing smallholders and cooperatives with the resources to grow and process some of Kenya's most fruit-forward coffees.

Due to the cool temperatures at altitude, particularly at night time, coffees from Kenya's central highlands tend develop and mature slowly producing very dense, hard beans high in acidity and complexity.

The Process

The coffee is wet processed, where the fully ripe cherries are:

  • Pulped
  • Fermented for 12 - 48 hours (depending on climatic conditions)
  • Washed
  • Dried slowly over 2 - 3 weeks on raised African beds until the moisture content is reduced to 10-12%.

The coffee is then delivered to Othaya dry mill where it is rested in parchment for 3 weeks before being hulled, cleaned and graded by bean size. Finally, the coffee is carefully handpicked before being bagged in GrainPro for export.

Love this coffee. I buy it over and over again. I’ve also tried a few of the speciality coffees. Bit more pricey but nice for a treat.

Best coffee to date

I'm fairly new to the pour-over scene, but I've enjoyed my journey in recent mo this, very much. This was capped a few weeks ago by a cupping session hosted by Lagom Coffee Bar, Newcastle upon Tyne which featured Outpost Coffee Roasters.

Of the 9 (or so) coffees, Los Quispe, Anaerobic Washed Gesha, Peru was the standout for me. So, I just had to order some.

The coffee came very quickly. After leaving it to degas for a week, I contacted Outpost to ask about brewing temperature: 92°C for the bloom, 95°C for the main pour. And that bit of I sight means the my pour-overs with this coffee have been spot on from the outset.
